“Challenging Stigma and Dispelling Myths” is the motto of the The Hooker Monologues, a project supported by CACVs Community Arts Fund. As this suggests, this project aims to raise awareness about issues of sex work and the challenges that sex workers face, an aim that has been greatly bolstered by media coverage from CBC’s The National. This 15 minute segment on The Hooker Monologues was aired nationwide on The National on December 9th:
Reporter Duncan McCue interviewed the organizers and participants in the project who shared their desire to produce social change:
“Society needs to change,” said (Carmen) Shakti, who described sex work as her calling, adding she specializes in tantric sex services. “I don’t like living in closets. They’re good for clothes and that’s about it.”
A crowdfunding initiative has been launched to further support of a full scale production of the show to be staged in March 2016.
