Media Coordinator – Eco-Arts Salons and Community Environmental Arts Projects
Application Deadline: April 30, 2011
Volunteer Information
Organization Name: Community Arts Council of Vancouver
Are you a fantastic communicator who’s passionate about the environment and arts? Do you have awesome communication skills that aren’t being put to use? Want to help share the good news about community-engaged environmental art?
Good news – we have a role for you!
We run a monthly Eco-Arts Salon at the Roundhouse and we need help getting the word out to artists, students, environmentalists, scientists – and, well anyone.
Just as important, we have a mission to build awareness and knowledge about the field of environmental arts and how engagement can intersect with community building and environmental activism. There are some fabulous environmental artists in and around the Vancouver area and part of our goal is to promote and support their work – directly through showcasing them at our salons and indirectly by sharing their news through our social media network.
We have a strong presence on facebook, twitter and have our own social media site (communityarts.ning.com). Some of our key volunteers are very innovative and always learning about new strategies and platforms. So you may learn from them (or maybe you’ll teach us all). We use hootsuite and timely.is and dropbox for sharing files
The media coordinator will be responsible for:
– ensuring news releases and public service announcements are sent to approximately 20 media contacts – This involves watching the calendar and making sure the notices go out at the time requested and in the specific format the particular media contact requires
– managing our EcoArtsSalon twitter and facebook accounts
– setting up EcoArtsSalon events on facebook and eventbrite, inviting our members and friends and responding to those who register.
Join the team: The Eco Arts Team meets 5:30-6:30pm on the 4th Wednesday before the Eco-Arts Salon. You’ll be part of the team to plan our future events and invite artists to participate.
You can also be involved with (optional)
– develop project/campaign-based social media strategy
– monitor social media statistics for Eco-Arts and recommend new strategies
– research, interview, write short articles for our environmental arts e-newsletter.
What you’ll get out of the experience:
– CONNECTIONS: You’ll meet great people who are creative and passionate about the environment-art-community intersection and know you’re helping them to spread the good word.
– EXPERIENCE! You’ll be developing, implementing and evaluating social media strategy from start to finish. You’ll be able to track your own metrics, learn about Internet users and how they communicate, gain experience in project management and time management and improve your writing skills.
LEARNING: You’ll have opportunities to extend your knowledge of social media and e-newsletters and also about the art practice of community-engaged environmental art.
Bonus! You’ll feel great at the end of the day because you’ve worked on a project that aims to increase engagement with this growing field of art practice. How’s THAT for beefing up the old resume?
